So, you want to make a Bog Coat! Well, you’ve come to the right place. Below, you'll find an invaluable guide to creating this simple garment. For this guide, plus step-by-step instructions, you can purchase the pdf version of this pattern here.

The bog coat sewing technique, also known as a "no-pattern" or "rectangle" coat, draws upon historical and practical clothing construction methods. Its origins lie in traditional garment-making practices where simple geometric shapes like rectangles and squares were used to create clothing efficiently, requiring minimal tailoring skills or pattern making.

bog coat materials: blanket, scissors, thread, sewing machine, bias tape

While the term "bog coat" itself is relatively modern, the technique it describes reflects a longstanding approach to garment construction. The term comes from the Scandanavian bog in which a preserved version of the garmet (extant example was a top, not unlike a modern t-shirt) was excavated.

The bog coat technique's appeal lies in its accessibility, making it ideal for beginners and experienced sewers alike who appreciate its simplicity and the opportunity for personalization. Modern interpretations may include variations such as linings, decorative stitching, or adjustments to fit preferences, while still maintaining the fundamental principle of using straightforward shapes and minimalistic construction methods.

First, ensure that your blanket is right for the project. Wool or heavy cotton blankets work well. It should be slightly wider than your wingspan, and around 10 in. longer than the desired finished length of the coat. Don’t get too caught up on measurements, as long as the general shape is correct, you’ll have a coat at the end of the day. You can create a basic bog coat by following the cutting guide above. Furthermore, see the folding guide below to understand how the full garment comes together. For more detailed instructions, you can purchase my digital pattern here.

Once cut, sew down the length of the sleeve, being sure to stop at armpit. Repeat on the opposite side. Then, sew the front body to the remainder of the sleeve/top body edge. Finally, add any desired embellishments, such as buttons, pockets, or trim. Your bog coat is now ready to wear! Enjoy your cozy and stylish new garment.
